How to Perform a “Despacho” Ceremony

When I stayed in a Q’eros village at 16,000 feet in the Andes last year, I was blessed to participate in several “despacho” blessings performed by the Q’eros shamans. To the Q’eros, the primary spiritual principle is one of “ayni,” which refers to a sort of spiritual reciprocity. They believe that “Pachamama” (Mother Earth) is inherently nurturing when all is in balance. When things go awry and this reciprocity is not honored, Pachamama withholds her blessings and may even become hostile. The fields may not yield as many potatoes, and natural disasters may destroy their homes or their people.

The Dark Side Of “Perfect”

By Lissa Rankin, MD   |   (59)
  |   Thursday, August 2nd, 2012
Although I adore my family and it's beautiful up here on Lake Erie in Ohio, the place I’m spending my summer vacation with my mother, daughter, nieces, and nephews isn’t the kind of place I’d choose to hang out left to my own devices. We’re vacationing at a Methodist-owned resort peopled by those who claim to share virtues and religious beliefs, pride themselves in being “old school," and live by the four pillars of education, religion, the arts, and recreation. It’s all very… I don’t know… Pleasantville. I almost feel like I’m in The Truman Show, the unwitting star of a reality TV show everyone but me knows is fake. Only this is real. Sort of. And as far as I can tell, there are no Big Brother cameras lurking around.

The $100 Investment: How One Person Really Can Change The World

Oh my goodness!  When I wrote this post about how to change the world with the $100 I was given at Chris Guillebeau’s World Domination Summit, I couldn’t have anticipated your beautiful visions and generosity! Countless people shared their visions for how they would use $100 to change the world. (You can read all the beautiful comments here). $800 in donations were collected from investors in this blog community who want your dreams to come true. And some of you were inspired to donate $100 - or more - to charities of your own or to give away products and services you’ve created in order to help others. I was moved beyond words at what happens when people open their hearts, release fear, tap into the Oneness that unites us all, and commit to service. Bless you for restoring my faith in humanity and inspiring me to give back in bigger ways. I had a tough time choosing how to invest the $100 Chris invested in me, but I finally chose Sara, mostly because her creative vision for how she will use the $100 felt most in line with Chris’s vision and mission, and it felt somehow fitting to pay it forward in a way that once again pays it forward.

Here’s How I Spent My $100 Investment
