Lissa Rankin’s Farewell Art Sale- All Paintings Original Paintings $100-500

After 17 wonderful years at 69 Starbuck, Lissa Rankin is heading to the Russian River for a six-month adventure with her partner Jeff. But before she goes, she’s opening her doors for a one-day-only art sale and goodbye gathering you won’t want to miss. Lissa is letting go of her entire collection of encaustic paintings (pigmented beeswax on panel), formerly featured in galleries around the world, including Caldwell Snyder in San Francisco, Fritz Contemporary on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, and eight other galleries.

Lissa’s art has been shown in museums around the world and graces some of the finest art collections. Her first book ENCAUSTIC ART features her paintings, as well as the paintings of 60+ other artists who work with the encaustic (pigmented beeswax) medium. It is used for teaching encaustic painting in both art schools and among hobbyists.

Now, all those paintings are available at a huge markdown—everything priced between $100–$500 (or pay what you can), including 5×6 foot works that once sold for $10,000. Whether you’re looking to brighten your home, support a neighbor, or just stop by to give a warm “See you soon,” come help us celebrate Lissa and Jeff before they head off.

Bring your art-loving friends—everyone’s welcome! Let’s send them off with love—and maybe some beautiful new art for your walls. Encaustic paintings on wood panel range in size from 12×12″ to 5×6 feet. We also have many original encaustic works on paper, both small and large. If you plan to buy large paintings, please bring a large enough vehicle to take them away. We have to have everything out of the house by May 27, so we apologize, but we cannot store them for you.

*Locals only, please. We cannot take responsibility for shipping. If you live far away and have a Bay Area friend who would take responsibility for shipping, you’re welcome to send them. But because it’s almost summer time and encaustic paintings need special shipping, we can’t take responsibility for handling shipping, especially at these bargain basement prices.

*Please park in the cul de sac at the end of Starbuck and walk down two houses. Our parking is limited at the house.

Lissa Rankin

Lissa Rankin, MD is a 16 year Muir Beach local whose art has been shown in some of the finest hotels, museums and galleries around the world. She works in encaustic art. Encaustic painters paint with pigmented beeswax, applied in molten form to wood panels and burned in archivally with blow torches and heat guns. It’s one of the most beautiful art mediums and, as the ancient Greeks have proven, encaustic paintings can last thousands of years without losing their luminosity. If you are interested in learning more about it, you can find her textbook, Encaustic Art at Random House. She looks forward to following the footsteps of her daughter, Mira, who has participated in the fair for many years, but who is currently in Portugal.

Encaustic Art: The Complete Guide to Creating Fine Art with Wax

With a history that stretches back to the hauntingly beautiful mummy portraits of Greco-Roman Egypt, encaustic art is now enjoying a renewal of popularity among artists and art lovers alike. Today, museums are staging exhibitions of encaustic art, workshops in the technique are thriving, and art collectors and dealers are assimilating encaustic art into their collections and galleries.

The word encaustic is taken from the Greek and means “to burn in.” In the encaustic process, pigmented wax is applied and then fused to a surface with heat. The result is a broad range of surface effects and a luminous translucency that is unique to the encaustic medium. Encaustic Art is a complete resource for artists who wish to learn to create fine art with wax. It features step-by-step techniques with easy-to-understand instructions and detailed illustrations, stunning examples of encaustic works of art (including sculpture), along with practical advice and thoughtful aesthetic observations from more than 60 professional artists working in the encaustic medium.
