In the face of a pandemic, we need more than just Outer Shield methods of prevention, such as lockdown, social distancing, and masks. Now more than ever, the importance of bolstering your Inner Shield so your body can be resilient in the face of this virus should you get exposed. (I wrote about lots of practical tips for bolstering your Inner Shield here.) While some Inner Shield methods take time, such as improving your physical fitness through workouts or treating unhealed trauma, some—such as doing a three-week green juice cleanse to detoxify your body and bolus it with immune-boosting superfoods, can be implemented quickly, with dramatic results.
In order to help those in our community who feel ready to embark upon a green juice cleanse with the support of a group of people doing a do-it-yourself cleanse from the safety of your shelter (or from a cooler you take to work with you), we’ve revived the Whole Health Green Juice cleanse, which I developed a decade ago with cleanse expert Tricia Barrett, when we were offering this three week cleanse to my patients in my integrative medicine practice.
We modified the way we used to do this cleanse live to make it accessible to people anywhere in the world. In 2010, we offered this program for $300 and facilitated several hundred people through the cleanse. Because of the economic strain so many face right now, we’re now offering the Whole Health Green Juice Cleanse FREE for anyone already subscribed to our Healing Soul Tribe. If you’re not in the Healing Soul Tribe and you’re interested in joining us for the Whole Health Green Juice Cleanse, there’s still time to join the tribe for a free 30-day trial.
Before I tried juice cleansing for the first time in 2009, I imagined that green juice would be something I’d gulp down, hold my nose, and force myself to drink. I’ve always been a veggie lover who adores farmer’s markets, salads, and other greens (what my father always called “food’s food”). But green juice looked like pond scum, and I imagined it tasted like it too. But as a physician working at an integrative medicine clinic in Marin County, California, I couldn’t overlook what was happening to patients who were doing the three-week cleanse themselves. People who had failed every diet were losing weight. Chronic pain and inflammatory conditions were getting better or resolving altogether. Cancer patients with poor prognoses were surviving against all odds. People with heart disease were finding that their coronary arteries had literally unblocked themselves. After witnessing the remarkable results in my patients, I reluctantly decided to try it myself.
Lissa’s First Cleanse Experience
With an open mind and a reluctant palate, I embarked upon a seven-day pre-cleanse, a seven-day green juice cleanse, and a seven-day post-cleanse with Tricia Barrett, which was far more enjoyable than I expected, as I found I loved the green juices, the broths, and vegan soups, and I had a deeply spiritual experience from the whole thing, which was a profound surprise for me (though it shouldn’t have been, given how many religions and indigenous traditions include fasting as a spiritual practice designed to bring you more in touch with God and the spiritual realm).
This cleanse was not a fast, however. It was highly nutritious—an overdose of superfoods—and I never felt deprived. To say that the cleanse was life-changing for me would be a massive understatement. When the cleanse ended, I ate an almost entirely raw-foods, vegan diet for a month. It’s not that I had become a zealot. I just felt so good. I kind of felt like the cleanse pushed the pause button on my life. Before the cleanse, I had been eating poorly, drinking wine almost every night, hooked on coffee, and eating tons of chips, processed foods, and meat. Since that cleanse over ten years ago, I drink fresh green juice almost every day, I learned how to make all kinds of delicious vegan meals (just because I love them), and I’ve become a veg-o-holic. I experimented with a raw, vegan diet for a while, and I didn’t thrive on it, so I’m technically what I jokingly call a “raw vegan omnivore” (I eat everything, including consciously-sourced meat, but I prefer eating a lot of raw and vegan foods).
I started doing the cleanse once every 3-6 months, as a reset, a reminder of how good my body could feel, and a detoxification to keep me healthy. I literally haven’t had a flu or even more than one day of a cold in 10 years, and after cleansing, I was able to get off all seven medications I had been taking before I started cleansing regularly. For me, drinking 3-5 green juices per day during the pandemic has been part of my preventive medicine strategy, and now Tricia and I feel called to teach anyone who wants to learn how to cleanse on your own how to do it. And we’re doing this as a public service—at no cost—so there’s no financial barrier to accessing this potentially life-saving intervention that can bolster your Inner Shield and help you develop resilience against not just Covid-19, but any disease.
What Does Cleansing Do To Your Body?
Nutritionally speaking, a few servings of organic green juice is a readily assimilated, easily digestible, unbelievably nutritious superfood, filled with more veggie goodness than you could possibly eat, given how fiber fills you up. Drinking green juice fills your body with living enzymes, vitamins, oxygen, and phytonutrients. Because of this, green juice feeds your cells the necessary nutrients, allowing your cells to uncover the body’s innate healing power, thereby boosting your body’s immunity to help you fight swine flu, as well as other infections. Also, because your juicer has eliminated the fiber that keeps you from being able to eat 3 pounds of green veggies in one sitting, it allows you to consume more veggies and provides your digestive tract with much-needed rest. Since your body doesn’t have to break down the vegetables in order to absorb the nutrition, it allows the body to focus on repair, healing, detoxification, renewal, disease prevention, and self-healing if you’re sick. As long as you use organic produce, the nutrition you introduce to your body via green juice has very few, if any, of the chemicals and toxins we Americans usually put into our bodies. Plus, as an added side benefit, your body’s aging process is indicative of how many enzymes are in your body. So by adding green juice to your diet, you may even add years to your life—and begin to appear younger as a side effect if you do this regularly.
Green juice also helps your body return itself to a state of healthy alkalinity. The pH of human blood has a very narrow window of safety, from about 7.35 to 7.45, as measured by an arterial blood gas. If it gets much above or below those levels, you are probably in the hospital—sick. Which means that the body prioritizes keeping blood pH within this range, even if it means sacrificing other necessary metabolic processes, such as getting rid of the toxins we ingest, absorb through our skin, and breathe. Eating alkaline foods allows the body to optimize its pH, thereby helping the body fight infection, cancer, and chronic disease.
Why Is It Important To Eat Alkaline Foods?
Many foods in the typical American diet (like a grande caramel macchiato with an extra shot, a double bacon cheeseburger, and pasta with cheese sauce) are acidic foods, which means that the body has to work hard to neutralize the effects of these foods on your blood. Since your metabolic pathways are responsible for keeping the blood pH between 7.35-7.45, they’re gonna work their tail off to do so.
This means that if the body is working like mad to keep your blood pH stable, it has less energy to fight the coronavirus and other assaults like cancer, chronic disease, and other infections.
If you participate in the cleanse, we’ll give you more of the science so you can understand what cleansing does to your body, but suffice it to say that green juice is good for you and that it boosts your immune system like no supplement or Outer Shield can.
If you’d like to cleanse with us, you can join the Healing Soul Tribe for a free month, and we’ll be doing the green juice cleanse during that first month, starting in about two weeks so you’ll have time to get a juicer (or do the Grocery Store Cleanse if you can’t afford a juicer).
This will be fun! So come play with us, bolster your Inner Shield, and learn how to love eating your veggies.
Green juice air hugs,
Lissa & Tricia Barrett
